The 6 Guns Every Girl Should Learn to Shoot

These are what every sporting son or daughter should be taught in terms of firearms training, not necessarily in this order.   Proper teaching should also include a hunter's safety course as well.  A .22 LR rifle upon which to learn to shoot such as a lightweight AR style  S&W M&P 15-22  or a lever action Golden Boy. A beginner's rifle AR Rifle in such as the S&W M&P .300 whisper or the Colt .223.  For white-tailed deer hunting, zombies, and to learn to shoot a real rifle, some also like a bolt action .243 in a junior model for this purpose of teaching beginner's to shoot and hunt.  An AR is a better option in my experience, for kids, due to the collapsible stock and light weight. A .22 LR handgun for small game and plinking, which is where the Ruger stands out as a good and fairly inexpensive choice. A shotgun, preferably graduating to a proper side by side shotgun in 20 or 12 gauge. A 9 mm handgun for self defense.  In a significant shift in law enforcement armament, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has selected the Gen4 Glock 17 and Glock 19 as its new service pistols. This decision marks a return to 9mm handguns for the agency and reflects a broader trend within law enforcement entities in the United States. .40 S&W has 387 ft lbs of energy at 50 yards, and has a velocity of 1,060 feet-per-second with a 155 grain bullet. You aren't likely to find many newer handguns chambered in .40 S&W. While it was a popular round in the 1990s, it has fallen out of favor for the less punishing 9mm Parabellum in recent times.

Navajo Story of First Horse

This is the Navajo story of First Horse “When the Holy People first made the horse, it was a complete thing, but it would not come to life. They tried to get it to rise up on its strong legs, but it would not rise. Caterpillar was asked to help. ‘How can I help?’ he asked. “’You know,’ one of the Holy People said, ‘where the sacred flints are kept.’” “’Yes, this is true. But I am pretty slow getting around.’” “Then the Holy People prayed over Caterpillar and he became Butterfly. Swiftly he flew to the Mountain Where Flint Is Kept. After gathering four flints, he returned to the Holy People and put the flints into the hooves of the horse. The great horse stirred, quivered, and came to life. Then it surged, leaped fully into life, struck the air with its hooves, and galloped off into the clouds. “’Look,” a Holy Person said. ‘The horse makes the marks of Butterfly when it dances on its hooves!’ And it has been that way ever since.” Navajo people believe that there are Five Horses of the Sun Father. And, they believe that they are a way of telling time, Navajo-style. White shell and pearl horses represent dawn, turquoise is noon, red shell is sunset, and jet or coal is night. (Adapted from An Ethnologic Dictionary of the Navajo Language, 1929; The Franciscan Fathers.) It’s only fitting that the old Indians used to tie a tree branch to a horses’s tail to cover up their tracks as they rode off to make a new camp.

Garden Seeds

Our Jamaican farmer friend Hamish used seeds in Colorado which he bought from Murdoch's, which seemed to be as good as any, which he used in a raised row garden.   Karen uses Henry Fields sees and then live plants for tomatoes, peppers and cabbage from Tagawa Gardens over in Parker.  We tried a bunch from www.rareseeds.com which didn't do great for us, but most were improperly planted.  We'll try them again next year and we are trying Victory Seeds for Navajo Tobacco next year.  Also trying some Navajo medicinal herbs to make Navajo tea and wild lettuce, together with some French marigolds for the side of the house from www.strictlymedicinalseeds.com.  We also got some strange seeds including Navajo Tea (Thelesperma filifolium), Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) and French Marigold (Tagetes Patula), from another online source, to try next year. Late Summer Plantings   Packages are shipping in 1-3 business days The weeks may be flying by, but there's still time to plant seeds that will gift you a harvest THIS FALL!! Red biting ants are bad powers and challengers. Other kinds of ants can be messengers and allies.  Small ants are a nuisance at a picnic but not a few in the garden.

Picnics

American friends, picture this:  a worn wooden cutting board, a well-patinaed Opinal knife, and a rustic French salami.  Perhaps another board with a cheese course featuring a French style home-made Boursin style cheese.  Sliced to perfection, there is a simple joy to the custom of stirring the appetite by serving thinly (the thinner the better with salumi) sliced cuts of peat.  This little ritual could be repeated daily on the fly fishing streams of France.  And it followed by some serious cooking from French asado to pates, and more. Whether it's tailgating after a polo match, having a lunch afield or a stream, it's important to put on a proper picnic.  Some of our favorite picnic recipes, include: Deviled Eggs Green Bean Salade or Skillet Asparagus Lentils ala Cheverny Pate` Pears and cheese Jamon and Pan con Tomat Choripanes Or, no time to assemble a picnic, at least make the best sandwich you will ever have, inspired by Parisian Bakery Alain Miam Miam The Ultimate Field Picnic I was sent a copy of this article on the ultimate picnic party wagon, which is a proper English wooden trailer converted for tailgating for polo matches.   Polo Magazine- Party Wagon Article. I then discovered Christy’s auction of Patricia Kluge’s estate in Virginia, and found that after the Kluge divorce, John Kluge remarried and built another house nearby.  This incredible picnic hamper is the piece de resistance  of the auction.  click article from the New York Times which appeared in December 2005. Apparently in the 1980’s by the Kluges commissioned the London firm of Asprey, jewelers and silversmith to the British Royal Family, to fashion this picnic hamper containing a full service for sixteen. The wicker trailer holds some 15 wicker cases, each fitted with brass handles and leather

Scarlet Oil

Farnam® Scarlex® Scarlet Oil Spray Wound Dressing is both a germicide and fungicide, which is safe to both horses and dogs.  We use it on all minor cuts, scrapes, and wounds.  Triple antibiotic ointments also work well on small wounds, but scarlet oil is our go to for bigger cuts, particularly on horses where it can be sprayed on.  Wish it came in clear, as it is not great for house dogs because of the red dye. DIRECTIONS - SHAKE WELL Remove protective cap. Point nozzle opening toward wound or affected area to be treated. Spray from a distance of 2 to 4 inches. Release spray by pressing valve stem down for just an instant. A one second application over the area to be treated provides an adequate dosage. Lynn Carlisle

I was just thinking of our late friend, Lynn Carlisle, today and two of our favorite watercolors from her, Arapahoe Ink and Indy.  She also painted my Brittany, Bodhi, on the front page of this web site.  To visit her collection see http://www.lynncarlisle.com Lynn Carlisle was one of the most gifted sporting artists ever and will be missed riding behind hounds on her adventures here.

New Load of Firewood-Bristlecone Pine, Quaking Aspen, and Maple

Bristlecone Pine is one of the oldest living organisms on the planet From  Wikipedia: This one aove might have died hundreds of years ago, but still stands. Its wood gives clues to scientists who read the rings to compare to rings of living trees, making a 9,000-year-long record. Bristlecone pines are known for attaining great ages. A specimen of Pinus longaeva located in the White Mountains of California is 5,068 years old according to measurements by Tom Harlan.[1] This is the oldest known individual tree in the world. The identity of the specimen is being kept secret by Harlan. Another well-known bristlecone from the White Mountains is Methuselah which is 4,850 years old. Its specific location is also being kept secret. The other two species, Pinus balfouriana and Pinus aristata, are also long-lived, though not to the extreme extent of P. longaeva; specimens of both have been measured or estimated to be up to 3,000 years old. It is believed that the longevity of the trees is related to the proportion of dead wood to live wood. This high ratio reduces respiration and water loss, thereby extending the life of the tree. Note that trees that reproduce by cloning can be considered to be much older than bristlecone pines. A colony of 47,000 quaking aspen trees (nicknamed "Pando"), covering 106 acres (43 ha) in the Fishlake National Forest of the United States, has been estimated to be 80,000 years old, although tree ring samples date individual, above-ground, trees at only an average of about 130 years. The Rocky Mountain population is severely threatened by an introduced fungal disease known as white pine blister rust, and by pine beetles. Another problem that the species face is climate change as temperatures have increased 0.5–1 °C within the past 30 years throughout the southern Rocky Mountain range. These changes in climate would mostly
