26 Constitutional Carry States

There are 20 million AR-style weapons in circulation in the US, according to the NSSF.  They're part of a total 393 million guns owned by US civilians, more than the American population.  And, interestingly enough, none have been used by anyone who is Hunter Safety Certified in a mass shooting. Around 19.8 million AR-15 style rifles are in circulation in the US, a nationwide tally that's surged from around 8.5 million since a federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004.  About 30% of rifle owners, own an AR.  The more recent estimate comes from a November 2020 statement by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. In the statement, its President and CEO Joseph Bartozzi called the AR-15 the "most popular rifle sold in America" and a "commonly-owned firearm."  A November 2020 Gallup poll found that 44% of Americans said they live in households with guns.

Corduroy

Corduroy is a textile with a distinctively raised "cord" or wale texture. Modern corduroy is most commonly composed of tufted cords, sometimes exhibiting a channel between them. Both velvet and corduroy derive from fustian fabric. Corduroy looks as if it is made from multiple cords laid parallel to each other. Loads of experts agree that the word “corduroy” comes literally from the French words “Cord du Roi” meaning “cord for Kings.” Textile archivists believe the fabric's original conception, whatever it was called, originate in Fustat, Egypt in 200 AD. It's clear that corduroy is an integral part of the current French wardrobe. https://www.buckmason.com/products/dress-navy-high-ridge-cord-carry-on-jacket https://www.buckmason.com/products/harvest-brown-cord-ford-standard-jean

Western Art I love

When competing for Miss Columbia, Tatiana Casto was asked if a museum were on fire would you save the art or the guard dog?   She replied, “The paintings are art. Art is to be given away, like love and peace. Animals, plants, and people are life. Life is to be kept.”

Rarities in France

Paris is known for shopping.  Some of my favorite places are Mettez, and others. But, Brooke Chilvers wrote, "In France, I am forever seeking out the remaining bits and pieces of authenticity that offer a window into its past. That combination of old stones and pleasing landscapes, with good tables serving local fare. An interesting church.  Monuments to a lost generation of men worth contemplating.  Splendid trees or wisteria, lilacs, old oaks, or whatever.  Fields with happy cows and good-looking horses.  And now, at my age, good bedding."  Here are some rarities of authenticity from our adventures in France. Wild Game is Anti-Inflammatory

I just had a really interesting conversation with one of the most respected cardiologists in the nation.  He was saying that recent studies have shown that feed-lot raised beef is inflammatory and high in fat.  Whereas pasture beef is not high in fat and not inflammatory.  And wild game meats have even more health benefits when compared to meats from domesticated or farm-raised animals. Examples of wild game include venison, bison, rabbit and elk. The fact that wild game animals eat their natural diet and are very active in the wild contributes to the lower fat content of the meat. Additionally, eating greens in the wild contributes to a lower content of pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids and a higher content of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. Furthermore, wild game meat is a good source of protein and minerals such as iron and zinc.  So, in fact, wild game has good fat and is anti-inflammatory. A recent article over at https://www.livestrong.com/article/349448-what-are-the-health-benefits-of-wild-game/ also echoed the same: Low Fat Content Wild game meats tend to have a lower fat content, as animals tend to be more active in the wild. Additionally, wild game eat a natural diet as opposed to grain or corn, which is often fed to domesticated animals, contributing to an increased fat content of non-game meat. Lower Omega-6 Fatty Acids The feeding of corn and grain to farm animals not only increases the total fat content but also the omega-6 fatty acid content. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, omega-6 fatty acids increase markers of inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with health conditions including obesity, diabetes, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Wild animals eat more grass, green leaves and plants than their domesticated counterparts, which

Warren Buffett on Predicting the Stock Market and His Strategy

The guru does not focus on the short term Warren Buffett's 90/10 strategy involves allocating 90% of assets to a low-cost S&P 500 index fund and 10% to short-term government bonds. The 90/10 rule offers simplicity, lower fees, and the potential for higher returns. The strategy is based on historical returns for the S&P 500, as well as Buffett's skepticism about the performance of the average fund manager. Ben Alaimo  From: https://www.gurufocus.com/news/1865637/warren-buffett-on-predicting-the-stock-market-and-his-strategy    Summary Warren Buffett is the leader of Berkshire Hathaway, the world's largest investing conglomerate. In a 1996 lecture at the University of North Carolina, he discussed predicting the stock market, business brands and his investment strategy.   Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, Financial)(BRK.B, Financial) leader Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) is considered one of the greatest investors of all time and, arguably, one of the wisest men in history. He loves giving lectures to students as he believes they listen and benefit the most from his talks. But it is clear that no matter what your age, we can all still learn from the Oracle of Omaha. I have summarized some main takeaways from a lecture he gave at the University of North Carolina in 1996 and expanded with my own comments. This is the first installment of a two-part series that focuses on stock market predictions and Buffett’s simple strategy. Predicting stock market movements Buffett admitted to not being able to predict the stock market in the short term or based on economic factors such as interest rates. Rather, he aims to buy businesses that would do well even if the stock market was closed. He does not focus on the daily stock movements and believes the market is there to serve you. In the past, Buffett has used

Advice from an Old Man

Water. I drink 2.5 liters of filtered water daily. No plastic bottled water. In the morning, my first glass is 16 oz with beet powder mixed in. Walk about 10–15k steps a day. Do throughout the day. I start with getting around 3–4000 steps in the morning after I rise. Exercise regularly (3 days a week for 40 minutes). I start each morning before my walk doing the following to warm up:3 rounds of 20 squats,100 pushup (40, 30, 30), and100 sit ups 40, 30, 30 in between the pushups above. Paleo diet. All organic. Some folks don’t get the whole organic thing but I believe that the pesticides in non organic food are probably not a good thing for our health. Eating Paleo eliminates foods that cause inflammation which leads to excess weight and a weakened immune system.   [We like the Whole 30 diet as well.] Meditate daily. [TM is great.] Don’t watch the news. It’s all bad and adds to stress.  [We still like newspapers.] Take vitamin D every day. Protect your eyes at night by dimming or shutting off as much blue light emitting bulbs and screens as you can. Nighttime light sends a signal to your body telling it it’s still daytime which prevents it from producing melatonin. This interferes with our circadian rhythm, thus our sleep cycle. A good 8 hours of sleep is great for long term health. Stay active. Hunt, fish, hike, hit the climbing gym.   I have keep a few key workout items at home (bands, a bench, some dumb bells, pull up bar). Get your cardio up double your resting rate for 20 minutes. Don’t be hard on yourself. Think good, positive thoughts.Bonus: Get periodic massages.

Racing speeds of quarter horses, thoroughbreds and Arabians

B D Nielsen 1, K K Turner, B A Ventura, A D Woodward, C I O'Connor Affiliations expand PMID: 17402407DOI: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.2006.tb05528.x Abstract Reasons for performing study: While Quarter Horses are recognised as the fastest breed of horse, direct comparisons to race times with other breeds can be misleading. Quarter Horse races begin when the starting gates open. Thoroughbred and Arabian races begin a short distance from the gates after horses have started running. This study compared speeds of these breeds as they accelerate from the starting gates and during the middle and end of races. Objectives: To compare racing speeds of the 3 breeds, and to compare speeds during various segments of the races. Methods: Video tapes of races were obtained from a local track. The various race segments were viewed and the winning horse timed by 5 individuals. Fastest and slowest times were removed and the 3 remaining times averaged. Results: Quarter Horses averaged faster speeds than Thoroughbreds even when Thoroughbreds were raced at a distance (402 m) similar to Quarter Horse races. Both breeds were substantially faster than Arabians. Quarter Horses racing 336 m or less gained speed in each segment of the race while Arabians and Thoroughbreds racing 1006 m ran fastest during the middle of the race and had decreased their speed in the final segment of the race. Conclusions: Despite similar race times reported for 402 m, Quarter Horses averaged faster speeds than Thoroughbreds when timed from a standing start. In short races, both breeds accelerate throughout the race. Arabians, despite being known for endurance, had slowed by the end of the race. Potential relevance: This study demonstrates that Quarter Horses achieve faster racing speeds than do other breeds. It also reveals a potential flaw in race-riding strategy as a more consistent pace throughout

When Did Oil Changes Get So Expensive

Oil is now $30 for 5 gallons of full synthetic and an oil change is now $130 at Jiffy Lube and other places. I prefer local places, such as Castle Rock Imports or Berkenkotter Garage, or Les Schwab.  Or do it yourself, see bottom of the page.   For diesel or Porsche type vehicles, it is well over $170 per oil change as of 2025. Conventional Oil: Many customers still prefer the lower cost and familiarity of conventional motor oil, particularly if their vehicle isn’t subject to severe driving conditions, such as dirty/dusty roads, lots of short trips, driving in extreme heat or cold, and towing heavy loads. High Mileage Oil: Specially designed for vehicles with over 75,000 miles. Helps keep engines that have been around the block a few times running better, longer by reducing oil burn-off, oil leaks and gradual loss of compression. Synthetic Blend Oil: A mixture of synthetic and conventional oils that serves as a midpoint between the two: better protection and performance than conventional oil can provide, especially in severe driving conditions, but not as good as a full synthetic oil. Synthetic Oil (AKA “Full Synthetic Motor Oil”): Specially formulated motor oil made for the highest levels of protection and performance for ultimate peace of mind. More and more vehicle manufacturers today require it. See if yours is one of them.
