Inexpensive Rubber Bird Dog Boots

I wanted to post these up here before I forgot to show our daughter how to make these rubber boots for bird dogs hunting in cactus country.  These come out like Lewis dog boots, which have gotten very expensive and are frequently lost afield.  However, these are more single use compared to the Lewis boots..  They are make from motorcycle inner tube tires and can be single use, but they work great.  From our Bird Dog Doc. Alternate method of improved stretchy Velcro attachment for 1000D nylon boots These are surprisingly decent for $3 each and I haven’t lost one yet with the improved closure system that they call Velstretch. Typical Velcro comes undone or slips off too easily in the field, but these work surprisingly well. https://dogbooties.com/shop/1000-denier-cordura-booties/ Lewis Dog Boots instructions for use

Washing Wool Coats

Just looking at ordering a new wool jacket for Thanksgiving hunting.  Found these great archery and bush coats from Fred Asbell, who is a legendary archery instinctive shooter, whose books were recommended to me 20 years ago by Buz Fawcett, our instinctive shotgunning instructor.  All of his books are well worth reading for any archer.  Anyway, back to wool, Fred's wife recommends the following method for washing wool, which is very similar to what English and Irish hunt staff do for their wool foxhunting coats.  They just use cold water in a feed trough and a stiff coat brush to scrub out mud or stains, then putting between towels and walking on it, then stretching a little while drying flat. WASHING WOOL By: Teresa Asbell There hasn’t been a lot written about caring for wool. One of the things you often see on labels is, Do not wash, Dry Clean only. Dry cleaning will certainly clean wool, but it fills it with chemicals that smell bad and removes the lanolin and oil. And if you are an outdoorsman, you don’t want to do that. All wool can be washed. How you go about doing it is important…but it is simple. Forget the wash machine and dryer. All wool should be hand-washed in cold water with a gentle soap. We use Charlie’s Soap, which is totally biodegradable and unscented and works particularly well on wool and silk. Woolite has been around for a long time and works well, but it has a fragrance in it, and I’d as soon not have that on my hunting clothes. A big container, like a bathtub, that will hold lots of water is best. Dissolve the soap in the water

Bripe Coffee

With the need for portable way to make espresso for hunting, fishing, camping and picnics, I was skeptical of the Bripe coffee pipe given the negative reviews and it isn't exactly cheap, but there aren't really any less expensive alternatives for convenient espresso while camping etc. After buying one and only one use, I can confidently say the negative reviews are user error by people that perhaps haven't made espresso or French press coffee before or didn't read the directions. If you grind your beans coarsely, this thing works perfectly. There are no grounds that get through the filter, as others have said. I haven't tried it with a fine espresso grind, and I see no reason to do that, as it makes excellent brew with coarse grinds, which is what it should be after all as this is more of a French press than it is an espresso machine. And it only takes about a minute to heat the water to temperature. It takes about 3 minutes to cool, while you stir a couple times with the thermometer. Then you blow gently into the straw, this is critical and something I learned in Argentina with mate bombillas, before sipping.  Best with Lavazza or Illy coffee beans, ground to the coarsest ground in your burr grinver, but Bripe recommend Death Wish Coffee, which I found to be just ok in terms of taste.

The 6 Guns Every Girl Should Learn to Shoot

These are what every sporting son or daughter should be taught in terms of firearms training, not necessarily in this order.   Proper teaching should also include a hunter's safety course as well.  A .22 LR rifle upon which to learn to shoot such as a lightweight AR style  S&W M&P 15-22  or a lever action Golden Boy. A beginner's rifle AR Rifle in such as the S&W M&P .300 whisper or the Colt .223.  For white-tailed deer hunting, zombies, and to learn to shoot a real rifle, some also like a bolt action .243 in a junior model for this purpose of teaching beginner's to shoot and hunt.  An AR is a better option in my experience, for kids, due to the collapsible stock and light weight. A .22 LR handgun for small game and plinking, which is where the Ruger stands out as a good and fairly inexpensive choice. A shotgun, preferably graduating to a proper side by side shotgun in 20 or 12 gauge. A 9 mm handgun for self defense.  In a significant shift in law enforcement armament, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has selected the Gen4 Glock 17 and Glock 19 as its new service pistols. This decision marks a return to 9mm handguns for the agency and reflects a broader trend within law enforcement entities in the United States. .40 S&W has 387 ft lbs of energy at 50 yards, and has a velocity of 1,060 feet-per-second with a 155 grain bullet. You aren't likely to find many newer handguns chambered in .40 S&W. While it was a popular round in the 1990s, it has fallen out of favor for the less punishing 9mm Parabellum in recent times.  The

Navajo Story of First Horse

This is the Navajo story of First Horse “When the Holy People first made the horse, it was a complete thing, but it would not come to life. They tried to get it to rise up on its strong legs, but it would not rise. Caterpillar was asked to help. ‘How can I help?’ he asked. “’You know,’ one of the Holy People said, ‘where the sacred flints are kept.’” “’Yes, this is true. But I am pretty slow getting around.’” “Then the Holy People prayed over Caterpillar and he became Butterfly. Swiftly he flew to the Mountain Where Flint Is Kept. After gathering four flints, he returned to the Holy People and put the flints into the hooves of the horse. The great horse stirred, quivered, and came to life. Then it surged, leaped fully into life, struck the air with its hooves, and galloped off into the clouds. “’Look,” a Holy Person said. ‘The horse makes the marks of Butterfly when it dances on its hooves!’ And it has been that way ever since.” Navajo people believe that there are Five Horses of the Sun Father. And, they believe that they are a way of telling time, Navajo-style. White shell and pearl horses represent dawn, turquoise is noon, red shell is sunset, and jet or coal is night. (Adapted from An Ethnologic Dictionary of the Navajo Language, 1929; The Franciscan Fathers.) It’s only fitting that the old Indians used to tie a tree branch to a horses’s tail to cover up their tracks as they rode off to make a new camp.

Don’t Bin Your Jack O Lantern-Pumpkin Soup

Over 60% of Halloween pumpkins get tossed in the trash, and the rate is higher in the UK for binning your Jack o lantern.  Instead, try this tasty French soup as our French friend, Laurent, describes simply as: Remove the seeds and filaments, dig the sides so you have enough space for the layers : 1 dried bread, or crumbs, 2 crème fraiche or sour cream, 3 mushrooms with a real flavour and again 1/2/3 until the top. 3 hours minimum at 180°Celsius, and you scoop the inside to mix the flesh and preparation. Then an electric hand mixer could help to get a nice creamy texture, or you stick to rustic crumbly aspect. If you do not like the result, if too thick, add chicken stock. Salt pepper. Parsley. Ready.

Compound Bow

After experimenting with Bowtech, PSE, and many others, we went with the bow that just felt right and that our daughter shot the best.  So we upgraded our daughter from a PSE Nighthawk recurve to a Bowtech Intrigue Blackout compound bow, 32" length, where she is currently drawing 25.5" at 28 lbs as a 12 year old and is now over 45 lbs draw weight at 14 years old, so it is perfect for anything from small game to big game, as well as 3D target shooting. We like the pink Shooting Carbon Express Mayhem Hot Pursuit 150 Hunting Arrows - Built-in Weight Forward ™ technology for down range accuracy with broadhead.  For target we are shooting the 150 Mayhem arrows with 100 grain points.  Getting ready for spring turkey and deer archery season next fall.  Jimmy recommended that she use 100 grain Muzzy broadheads, but he is trying a new Montec G5, as he can’t find the Muzzy and he strongly recommends against the expandable broadheads for white-tailed deer.  We got both to experiment with, together with some grass tumble points for bunnies and prairie dogs.     Working on 40 yard shots for whitetails, which is about the maximum effective range, though some cowboys will try to sell you on 60 yards.

Garden Seeds

Our Jamaican farmer friend Hamish used seeds in Colorado which he bought from Murdoch's, which seemed to be as good as any, which he used in a raised row garden.   Karen uses Henry Fields sees and then live plants for tomatoes, peppers and cabbage from Tagawa Gardens over in Parker.  We tried a bunch from www.rareseeds.com which didn't do great for us, but most were improperly planted.  We'll try them again next year and we are trying Victory Seeds for Navajo Tobacco next year.  Also trying some Navajo medicinal herbs to make Navajo tea and wild lettuce, together with some French marigolds for the side of the house from www.strictlymedicinalseeds.com.  We also got some strange seeds including Navajo Tea (Thelesperma filifolium), Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) and French Marigold (Tagetes Patula), from another online source, to try next year. Late Summer Plantings   Packages are shipping in 1-3 business days The weeks may be flying by, but there's still time to plant seeds that will gift you a harvest THIS FALL!! Red biting ants are bad powers and challengers. Other kinds of ants can be messengers and allies.  Small ants are a nuisance at a picnic but not a few in the garden.
