The tungsten product which Rim Chung and I are using can be purchased from Cabela’s for about $5 a pack and is called Soft Tungsten Tacky Weight. We mix this with the original lead we used called Shape-A-Wate, which is nearly impossible to get because its sole maker died and did not leave the formula behind. Shape-A-Wate is basically lead putty, but it is easily molded into a cigar shaped bullet on the line and is a better consistency than all of the current replacements on the market, which include Mojo Mud and some others. Mixing the two putties increased (doubled) the amount of usable putty Rim had in store with his few cartons of Shape-A-Weight that he had left and improved the consistency of the Tacky Weight, when used alone, for when it is used alone it is a bit too soft–and it may also be a bit too sticky, leaving marks on your rod or car seats.
We’ve also used Loon’s putty, which is horrible (stains on my rod and car interior are proof of that fact, as well as the countless amounts that fall off the line on a hot day fishing).
Orvis’ Sink Putty is a good product which has similar properties to Shape-A-Wate. I have also mixed this with Tacky Weight tungsten and the result seemed acceptable.
